If you are looking to utilize and further develop your business skills, while having an experience that will help you stand out in an interview or on a resume, then consider traveling with a group of Penn State students on a business/microfinance brigade to Ghana. Smeal's Global Business Brigades is searching for more students to participate in this year's volunteer trip, right after finals but before most jobs begin, from May 13th to 22nd.
While in-country, participants educate rural community members about their personal finances through training in basic accounting and financial planning. Brigaders also work to improve small businesses by teaching owners about price setting, recording methods, marketing techniques, profit calculation, and inventory management. In many partnered communities, the national organization is beginning to set up a Community Development Fund, that satisfies otherwise inaccessible microfinance functions, such as savings accounts and small loans. Therefore, the last part of the group's mission is to train the leaders of this community-run bank and explain to local families the potential benefits and consequences of savings and credit.
