Smeal Scholarships

To recognize the accomplishments of our students, the Smeal College of Business Undergraduate Scholarship Committee awards over $2,000,000 annually in scholarships and awards. Funds are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, co-curricular and leadership activities, as well as work experience.

Who receives a scholarship?

The typical recipient of a Smeal College scholarship is a sophomore or junior at the time of application, has a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, and has unmet financial need. However, all currently enrolled students are eligible to apply. The selection process is extremely competitive.

What is the amount of most scholarships?

The average scholarship award is $2,500.

Are incoming first-year students eligible for scholarships?

First-year students enrolling in the Smeal College of Business are automatically considered for the small number of merit and need-based scholarships available. Recipients are notified by March 1.

How can I be considered for a scholarship?

Smeal College undergraduate students must submit an on-line scholarship application available through this site beginning March 11, 2021. An e-mail message will be sent to Smeal students at all locations notifying them of application availability. The deadline to apply for scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year is May 9, 2021.

Because most of our scholarships require documented financial need, students should also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To find out more about the application process for the FAFSA visit the Office of Student Aid. You must be eligible to receive federal aid in order to qualify for a Smeal Scholarship.

How will I be notified?

Scholarship awarding is an ongoing process. Efforts are made to award scholarships prior to August 1 for the upcoming academic year, but awards may be made throughout the year. Only those students who are selected to receive an award will be contacted. Scholarship awardees will be notified by email to their Penn State email address.

Online Application

The 2021-2022 scholarship application is now closed. The deadline to submit your application was May 9, 2021.

Are there any other scholarships available to Smeal students?

Most of our academic departments have scholarships they award to students in their majors. By completing the Smeal College Scholarship Application students will also be considered for awards given by our academic departments.

Information about other scholarship opportunities may be obtained by going to the Smeal Student Exchange Website, the Office of Student Aid and the Undergraduate Fellowships Office web pages.

In addition, students who are within 30 credits of graduation may want to consider an application for "Complete Penn State." The Complete Penn State program is run by the Student Success Center and provides resources for students who are in their final two semesters of completing their first associate's or bachelor's degree. Complete Penn State supports students who experience a situation that negatively impacts their ability to complete their degree.
