Petition for Department Review for Change of Major

In order to request a change of major, students must be in their first semester of official enrollment in a Smeal College of Business major and currently taking coursework towards that major.  Requests for change of major will typically be reviewed at the end of the fall semester of the student’s junior year.  Requests are considered on a space available basis without guarantee of approval.  Academic performance in courses considered relevant to the major will be taken into consideration.  Only junior students on fall semester leave of absence, study abroad or internship or co-op may request to change their major at the end of the spring semester.  Students also must meet the academic entrance requirements of the desired major as established during the entrance to major period.  

All programs are now at or over capacity, therefore choices are limited.  The Finance (FIN) major, Accounting (ACCTG) major, Risk Management major with Actuarial Science (RM-ACTSC) option, and Risk Management major with Enterprise Risk Management (RM-ERM) option are not accepting new applicants due to overcapacity.  It is recommended that a student contact his or her assigned academic adviser regarding availability within specific majors.

To summarize, there will be two reviews for possible change of major:
1. A junior student applying for possible change of major at the end of the Fall 2015 semester must submit the completed Change of Major Petition Form and attach a letter explaining why the change of major is being requested no later than Friday, December 11, 2015.  No petitions will be accepted after this deadline.  Students will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of this process by Friday, January 8, 2016.

2. Only junior students on leave of absence, studying abroad or engaged in internships or co-ops during the Fall semester of their junior year may request to change their major at the end of the Spring 2016 semester.  Students must submit the completed Change of Major Petition Form and attach a letter explaining why the change of major is being requested no later than Friday, April 29, 2016.  No petitions will be accepted after this deadline.  Students will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of this process by May 20, 2016.

Requirements:
A student desiring to change from one major to another within the Smeal College of Business may submit a petition (and supporting material) provided there is enrollment capacity and provided the student satisfies the following minimum academic requirements:
• Meets the academic entrance requirements of the desired major as established during the entrance to major period.
• Completes one semester of coursework in the currently assigned major.

Process:
1. Complete the Change of Major Petition Form and attach a letter explaining why the change of major is being requested. 
2. Submit a completed form and supporting material to one’s assigned academic adviser prior to the deadline.
