Petition for Dean’s Review for Change of Major
Change of Major process at Smeal
Requests by current sophomores (who were first-time students who entered Penn State summer 2007, fall 2007 or spring 2008) for consideration for a change of major into another Smeal College major will be reviewed at the end of their sophomore year spring 2009 semester and at the end of the fall 2009 semester of their Junior year. Both the fall 2008 and the spring 2009 cumulative GPA must meet the established criteria of the major. Requests will be considered on a space available basis for those students who were originally given a conditional offer of a Smeal College major. Change is not guaranteed and applicants must meet established course and cumulative GPA criteria for the desired major. See entrance to major information.
The following controlled majors are oversubscribed and will probably not be available for Change of Major: Finance (FIN) and Marketing (MKTG). The remaining controlled majors: Accounting (ACCTG), Management ( MGMT), Management Information Systems (MIS) and Supply Chain and Information Systems (SC&IS) will have limited space availability. There are no guarantees and you must have met the required GPA cut-off for the major and maintained the CGPA through SP09. The non-controlled major of Economics (BA EC) is an open major and students can request this major if they meet established course and cumulative GPA criteria of 2.0.
Students can request a Dean’s Review for Change of Major at the end of the spring 2009 semester and the end of the Fall 2009 semester. Eligible students considering a change should discuss the intent with their current adviser. A Petition for Dean’s Review for Change of Major should be completed and submitted to Gus Colangelo, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs or their respective Smeal academic advisor in the Smeal College Undergraduate Programs located in 202 Business Building. There will be two reviews for possible change of major:
1. Sophomore students applying for possible change of major at the end of the spring 2009 semester need to submit the completed Petition for Dean’s Review for Change of Major form and attach a letter of justification no later than May 15, 2009. Students submitting requests for review by the established deadline will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of this process by June 12, 2009.
2. Junior students applying for possible change of major at the end of the fall 2009 semester need to submit the completed Petition for Dean’s Review for Change of Major form and letter of justification no later than December 4, 2009. Students submitting requests for review by the established deadline will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of this process by December 20, 2009.
