FTCAP
First-Year Testing, Counseling and Advising Program
The First-Year Testing, Counseling and Advising Program (FTCAP) is the academic orientation that all incoming Penn State students participate in during the summer before they arrive on campus. This section provides a brief overview of the program as well as resources referred to and provided during Smeal’s portion of FTCAP.
On the day you attend FTCAP, you will or have already attended a general presentation by the university in the morning that covers general university requirements, student life, and other policies and procedures. In addition to this information, Smeal provides a college-specific academic orientation in the afternoon each day during FTCAP. In this presentation, we cover information about our curriculum, the entrance-to-major process within the college, and other opportunities for Smeal students. Students then work with advisers from the Smeal Advising Center to create summer and/or fall schedules while parents learn more about what their sons and daughters will experience in their first year and about university resources.
